Q. What is the purpose of writing this book?
A. I remember my first teaching day as if it were yesterday. I was feeling terrified and felt completely unprepared. It wasn’t till many prac students walked through my classroom door and standing in front of 4th year graduating education students that I knew most beginning teachers feel exactly the same way I felt all those years ago.
It was after much discussion with these new beginning teachers that I decided to write my book. The whole purpose of my book is to take away that feeling of dread and to help you new teachers get prepared and feel a little sense of confidence on your first day. I wanted beginning teachers to have a resource that gave them a starting point. Something you can refer to while you get on your feet and start finding your own way.
The 5 week unit plan that is provided is not written in the latest education syllabus format and nor is it meant to be. It is a selection of lessons that you can adapt for any year level to have at your finger tips in those times when you have nothing else prepared. It is written for junior school as many of the gradating students I consulted with when writing this book, found lower school the most daunting to teach and felt they could always adapt a lesson plan for older children but would find it most difficult to adapt a lesson plan for younger children.
I wanted this book to be easy to read and packed with tips and suggestions to help you get established quickly in your new classroom. Even after 15 years of teaching experience I still open this book every January and tick off the list of things that I need to have prepared. If this resource helps you in a small way or it is your lifeline for a couple of weeks then I have reached my goal of helping our new beginning teachers. Good Luck!
